Diamond earrings are the piece most people wear every day, and lab-grown diamonds have made bigger, brighter pairs affordable. Here's how to choose.
Studs: sizes and total carat weight
Stud sizes are usually quoted as total carat weight (ct TW) for the pair:
- 0.50 ct TW (0.25 each): subtle and dainty
- 1.00 ct TW (0.50 each): the classic everyday size
- 2.00 ct TW (1.00 each): noticeable and glamorous
- 3.00 ct TW and up: statement studs
Because lab-grown diamonds cost much less, many buyers go up one size compared with mined stones.
Matching matters
A pair should match in size, colour and cut so both ears look identical. Ask for a matched pair, and for larger studs, for individual reports.
Settings
- Four-prong: shows the most diamond; classic.
- Three-prong (martini): sits close to the ear and looks larger.
- Bezel: a metal rim around the stone; secure and modern.
- Halo: small diamonds around the centre for a bigger look.
Backings
- Push backs: standard and easy.
- Screw backs: most secure; recommended for larger studs.
- Lever backs: common on drops and hoops.
