Lab-grown diamonds are now easy to find in the UK, from high street chains to independent jewellers in London's Hatton Garden and Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. The question is no longer *whether* you can buy one, but *where* gives you the best combination of choice, quality and value.

1. High street jewellers

Pros: you can see and try pieces in person, easy returns, familiar brands. Major names such as Pandora now sell lab-grown diamond collections in the UK.

Cons: ranges focus on ready-made designs and smaller stones; less room for customisation.

2. Independent jewellers (Hatton Garden, Jewellery Quarter)

Pros: expert advice, bespoke design and the chance to choose a specific loose diamond.

Cons: quality and pricing vary between shops, so compare several.

3. Online retailers

Pros: huge choice of certified loose stones with photos, videos and reports.

Cons: you can't see the stone in person, so the return policy and certificate matter even more.

4. Direct from a manufacturer

Pros: closest to the source, with the ability to choose exact specifications. Ideal for jewellers, designers and buyers who want something bespoke.

Cons: you handle more of the process yourself, including shipping and import paperwork.

What to check wherever you buy

  • The stone is described as laboratory-grown (or lab-grown), never simply "diamond".
  • There is an IGI or GIA report for centre stones, with the report number laser-inscribed.
  • Gold and platinum items sold in the UK above the legal weight thresholds carry a UK hallmark from an Assay Office.
  • Clear return and resizing policies.

Importing from abroad

If you buy directly from overseas, import VAT (currently 20%) and any applicable duty are normally due when the parcel enters the UK, and couriers may charge a handling fee. Factor this into your comparison.

For UK jewellers

If you are a UK retailer or designer, working directly with a manufacturer gives you consistent stones and your own designs. See our price list or contact us.
