UK customers are asking for lab-grown diamonds by name, and many independent jewellers and designers want their own range rather than relying on finished stock. Sourcing directly from India, where most of the world's laboratory-grown diamonds are cut, is the natural next step. Here is what to plan for.
1. Define your range
Decide which shapes, sizes and grades your customers want. Many UK jewellers start with:
- round and oval centre stones from 0.50 to 2.00 carats, IGI certified
- matched melee for halos and eternity bands
- a small selection of fancy shapes for bespoke clients
2. Choose a supplier
Look for clear descriptions (laboratory-grown, CVD or HPHT, treated or as-grown), current price lists, consistent matching and experience shipping to the UK.
3. Customs and VAT
- Goods enter under the UK Global Tariff. Laboratory-grown diamonds fall under heading 7104; confirm the commodity code and any duty with your customs agent.
- Import VAT (standard rate 20%) is due on import. VAT-registered businesses can usually use postponed VAT accounting to account for it on their VAT return rather than paying at the border.
- Insured courier services for valuables handle UK clearance for you or through your agent.
4. Hallmarking
When you set stones into precious metal and sell in the UK, items above the legal weight thresholds must be hallmarked by a UK Assay Office. Plan the assay step into your production timeline.
5. Tell customers clearly
Describe stones as lab-grown (or laboratory-grown) in store, online and on receipts. Clear disclosure protects your reputation and keeps your marketing on the right side of advertising rules.
6. Build a repeat relationship
Standard specifications, agreed price validity and reliable matching make repeat orders simple. Many UK jewellers keep a core stock of popular sizes and order bespoke stones on demand.
