If you have started looking at diamond jewellery recently, you have almost certainly seen the words lab-grown, lab-created or man-made. They all describe the same thing: a real diamond that was grown in a controlled environment instead of being mined from the earth. In India the formal term is laboratory-grown diamond, and that is what you should see on invoices and certificates.

A real diamond, not a look-alike

A diamond is pure carbon arranged in a very strong crystal structure. A laboratory-grown diamond has exactly the same structure and the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mined one. It is just as hard, it bends light in the same way and it sparkles in the same way.

That is what separates it from simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. Those stones look similar at a glance but are different materials. A laboratory-grown diamond is not "like" a diamond; it is a diamond with a different origin.

How are they made?

There are two main methods:

  • CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition): a thin diamond seed plate is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. The gas is turned into a plasma and carbon atoms settle on the seed, building the crystal layer by layer over several weeks.
  • HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature): carbon is exposed to the extreme pressure and heat found deep underground, recreating the conditions in which natural diamonds form.

After growth, the rough crystal is planned, cut and polished exactly like a mined diamond. In Surat, the same skilled cutters who have polished natural diamonds for generations now polish laboratory-grown stones too. We explain both methods in detail in CVD vs HPHT vs natural diamonds.

Why are they less expensive?

Mining a diamond involves exploration, heavy machinery, long supply chains and scarcity. Growing one takes weeks and a predictable process. That is why a laboratory-grown diamond typically costs a fraction of a mined diamond of the same size and quality, which lets buyers choose a larger or better-graded stone for the same budget.

Can anyone tell the difference?

Not with the naked eye, and not with a simple diamond tester. Gemmological laboratories use advanced instruments to identify the growth method, which is why every reputable laboratory-grown diamond of a meaningful size comes with a grading report from a lab such as IGI or GIA stating that it is laboratory-grown. See what to check on a certificate.

Is a lab-grown diamond right for you?

It is a great choice if you want:

  • a real diamond with full sparkle and durability for everyday wear
  • more size or quality for your budget
  • a clear, documented origin

If the idea of a stone formed over billions of years matters most to you, a natural diamond may still feel right, and that is a perfectly valid choice too.
