On 17 December 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Surat Diamond Bourse in our home city of Surat. The complex is recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's largest office building, larger than the Pentagon, with around 660,000 square metres of floor space.
What is the Surat Diamond Bourse?
It is a purpose-built trading centre for the diamond and jewellery business. Alongside thousands of offices for diamond companies, it brings together services that international trade depends on, including a customs clearance house, a jewellery mall, international banking and safe vaults.
At the inauguration, the Prime Minister described the bourse as a one-stop centre for everyone in the industry, from workers to traders, and said it would support around 1.5 lakh jobs.
Why it matters for Surat
Surat already cuts and polishes the large majority of the world's diamonds, natural and laboratory-grown. Until now, much of the trading and export activity has been concentrated in Mumbai. The bourse brings trading, certification services and export logistics closer to where the diamonds are actually cut.

Good news for laboratory-grown diamonds
Surat is also the heart of India's laboratory-grown diamond industry, from growing and planning to cutting and polishing. A world-class trading hub in the same city strengthens that whole ecosystem and India's position as the leading supplier of polished laboratory-grown diamonds.
