"Bespoke" is one of the most searched words alongside engagement rings in the UK, and lab-grown diamonds have made bespoke design far more accessible. Here's how the process works.
1. Consultation
Share your ideas: shape, style, metal, budget and any inspiration photos. A good designer will ask about the wearer's lifestyle and existing jewellery.
2. Choosing the diamond
With lab-grown diamonds, you can choose from a wide range of certified stones. Popular UK choices include oval, round, emerald and elongated cushion centre stones, often 1–2 carats. Ask for the IGI report and check it online.
3. Design and CAD
The ring is designed in CAD (computer-aided design), and you'll see renders from every angle. Details to decide:
- Setting: solitaire, halo, hidden halo or trilogy
- Band: plain, pavé or split shank
- Profile: low-set for everyday comfort, or raised for drama
- Wedding band fit: will a straight band sit flush?
4. Making
The design is cast in metal, the diamond is set by hand and the ring is polished and finished.
5. Hallmarking
Rings sold in the UK above the legal weight thresholds must be hallmarked by a UK Assay Office. This confirms the precious metal content.
6. Timeline
Allow four to eight weeks from design approval, depending on complexity and whether the ring is made abroad. If you have a proposal date, start early.
