The old advertising line about spending "three months' salary" on an engagement ring never made much sense. Today, with lab-grown diamonds, the math has changed completely.
Start with what you want to spend
Pick a number that fits your life: rent, savings, the wedding itself. Then work out how to get the most beautiful ring for it, not the other way round.
Where lab-grown changes the equation
For the same budget, a lab-grown diamond typically lets you choose:
- a larger center stone (many couples now choose 1.5–2 carats), or
- a higher grade (D–F color, VVS–VS clarity), or
- a more detailed setting (hidden halo, pavé band), or
- simply a smaller spend, with the difference going towards the wedding or a home.
Where to spend
1. Cut quality: this is what makes a diamond sparkle. Never compromise here.
2. The setting's craftsmanship: secure prongs and a well-finished band last decades.
3. Size: once cut is right, go as large as your budget comfortably allows.
Where to save
- Color: G–H looks white in most settings, especially yellow or rose gold.
- Clarity: VS2 or even a clean SI1 is eye-clean in many stones.
- Carat thresholds: a 0.95-carat stone looks the same as a 1.00 but can cost noticeably less.
Don't forget
- An IGI or GIA report for the center stone
- Insurance from day one
- A wedding band that sits well with the engagement ring
