With lab-grown diamonds now in most US engagement rings and a growing share of fashion jewelry, a reliable supply chain is essential for independent retailers. Here's how to build one.

1. Pick suppliers for consistency, not just price

The lowest quote isn't always the best value. Look for:

  • clear labelling: lab-grown, CVD or HPHT, as-grown or treated
  • IGI reports on center stones
  • consistent matching for melee and pairs
  • fast, transparent quoting and a current price list

2. Standardize your specs

Define your core assortment by shape, size bands and grades, for example 1.00–2.00 ct ovals, G–H, VS, Excellent/Very Good. Standard specs make reorders simple and margins predictable.

3. Mix stock and on-demand

  • Keep core stock of best-selling sizes and shapes.
  • Order special stones for bespoke clients on demand.
  • Ask about memo arrangements for high-value stones.

4. Plan for customs and costs

Laboratory-grown diamonds fall under tariff heading 7104. Duty rates and trade rules can change, so check current US tariff treatment and landed costs with your customs broker before each season.

5. Diversify

Many retailers work with two or three suppliers to balance price, speed and specialization, for example one for melee and one for certified solitaires.

6. Communicate clearly with customers

Describe stones as lab-grown, show the report and explain the value. Customers appreciate transparency.
