A matched pair is two diamonds that match in shape, size, color, clarity, cut and proportions, so they look like one stone set twice. Jewelers order matched pairs for earrings, toi et moi rings and bridal sets. At Sheladiya Diamond in Surat, we select and check each pair before it leaves our office. This guide explains what to specify, what to check and how to order.

What is a matched pair of lab-grown diamonds?
A matched pair is two polished lab-grown diamonds graded and selected to look identical when set side by side. The two stones share the same shape, carat weight within a tight range, color, clarity and cut. Matching matters most in earrings, because the eye compares the two stones at once.
Which specs must match in a pair?
Specify all of these in your request:
- Shape and cut: round, oval, pear, emerald or another fancy shape, with the same proportions.
- Carat weight: the same weight for both stones, or a stated range for each.
- Color: for example F or better, with both stones in the same color grade.
- Clarity: for example VS1 or better, or VVS/VS as in our quality A band.
- Certification: IGI, GIA or GCAL, with a grading report for each stone where you need one.
Our price list groups stones into two quality bands. Quality A is EF color with VVS/VS clarity. Quality B is GH color with VS/SI clarity.
Matched pair vs matched parcel
| | Matched pair | Matched parcel |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Earrings, toi et moi rings, bridal sets | Production runs, collections, repeat orders |
| Number of stones | Two, selected to match | Many stones of one spec, sorted by size |
| What you check | Each stone side by side, plus both reports | Sieve size, color and clarity range across the lot |
| Best for | One design, one set of stones | Consistent output across many pieces |
How to order a matched pair: 5 steps
1. Send your spec. Give shape, carat, color, clarity, certification and the design (stud, drop, ring).
2. Confirm stock or cut. We check what we hold. For a new size we cut to your requirement.
3. Pair and check. Our team pairs the stones and checks them side by side.
4. Review the reports. Each stone's certificate shows its own grade, so check both.
5. Approve and ship. Approve the quote, then we ship with insured courier.
For melee sizes, the sieve, millimeter and weight columns on our price list help you check the spec. For example, a 4.00 mm round in the +17.5 -18.0 sieve weighs 0.240 ct, with about 4 stones per carat. At quality A, the price list shows INR 7,500 per carat for that size. Prices may change at the time of ordering, so we confirm them when you order.
What to check before you accept a pair
- Both stones have a report, with the same shape, weight, color and clarity.
- The measurements on each report are close, so the stones set level.
- The growth method and any post-growth treatment are disclosed on the report and invoice, as Indian Standard IS 19469:2025 requires.
- The quote states the quality band, currency and what is included.

Can I order a matched pair in a fancy shape?
Yes. We cut fancy shapes to your requirement. Send the shape, carat range and proportions you need.

Lead time depends on whether the stones are in stock or must be cut. [NEED: standard lead times for stock and cut-to-order pairs]
