Buying a laboratory-grown diamond is simpler than buying a mined one: prices are lower and certification is widespread. But the same rule applies: know exactly what you are buying. Run through this checklist before you pay.

The stone

1. Is it clearly described as laboratory-grown? On the listing, the certificate and the invoice. In India the formal term is "laboratory-grown diamond".
2. Is there an independent grading report? For stones of about half a carat and above, ask for IGI or GIA. See our certificate guide.
3. Does the report number check out? Verify it online and look for the laser inscription on the girdle.
4. How good is the cut? For rounds, choose Excellent or Ideal. For fancy shapes, check proportions and look for dark areas such as a bow-tie.
5. Color and clarity: D–H and VVS–VS are the sweet spots for most buyers. The 4Cs guide explains why.
6. Treatments: read the report's comments for post-growth treatment. It is common and permanent, but you should know.
7. Fluorescence: usually none or faint in lab-grown stones; strong blue fluorescence can make some stones look hazy in sunlight.
8. Photos and video: ask for a video under natural light, especially online.

The jewelry

9. Metal and hallmark: check gold purity (14K/18K) and, in India and the UK, the legal hallmark.
10. Setting quality: secure prongs, smooth finish, comfortable fit.

The deal

11. Invoice: carat weight, grades, report number, metal and price, with "laboratory-grown" stated.
12. Policies: returns, resizing, warranty and after-care.

A final tip

Don't buy a laboratory-grown diamond as a financial investment. Buy it because it is beautiful and fits your budget, which it does extremely well.
