India is the world's leading source of polished laboratory-grown diamonds, and most of them are cut and polished in Gujarat. Buying directly from an Indian manufacturer gives jewelers access to consistent stones at wholesale prices. Here is how the process works, step by step.

Step 1: Choose a supplier

Look for a manufacturer or wholesaler that:

  • describes stones clearly as laboratory-grown, with growth method (CVD or HPHT)
  • offers IGI or GIA reports for larger stones
  • publishes current prices or quotes quickly and transparently
  • has a clear policy on matching, returns and replacements
  • has experience shipping to your country

Step 2: Send precise specifications

Give your supplier exact requirements: shape, size (millimetres or carats), color and clarity range, cut grade, quantity, and whether you need reports. For melee, specify sieve sizes; see our melee guide.

Step 3: Samples and approval

For a new relationship, start with a small order or a memo of stones for approval. Check stones under a loupe and a daylight lamp and compare them with the reports.

Step 4: Paperwork

Your supplier issues a commercial invoice describing the goods as laboratory-grown diamonds with carat weight, value and HS code. Under the international Harmonized System, cut and polished laboratory-grown diamonds fall under heading 7104, with 7104.91 covering worked synthetic diamonds. Check the exact code and any duty with your customs broker.

Laboratory-grown diamonds are not covered by the Kimberley Process, which applies to rough natural diamonds, so no KP certificate is needed.

Step 5: Insured shipping

Diamonds travel through specialized insured courier services for valuables. Your supplier handles export clearance in India. You or your broker handle import clearance at your end.

Step 6: Customs, duty and tax

Import duty and sales taxes depend on your country. Some countries have trade agreements with India that reduce or remove tariffs; Australia's ECTA with India, for example, gives zero-duty access to most Indian exports. Always confirm the current rules with your broker before your first shipment.

Step 7: Build a repeat relationship

Once you have a reliable supplier, repeat orders become simple: standard specs, predictable pricing and consistent matching.
